RAG in simple words: how AI searches by meaning

What Retrieval-Augmented Generation means, how semantic search works and why RAG answers with source links.

RAG, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation, means AI first finds relevant documents and then answers using them. The model uses your data instead of guessing from memory.

How it differs from normal search

Keyword search matches words. Semantic search matches meaning. If one document says login and another says authorization, semantic search can understand the link.

  • Keyword search: exact or close words
  • Semantic search: meaning through embeddings
  • RAG: semantic retrieval plus an answer based on found sources

How it works

  • 1Documents are split into chunks
  • 2Chunks become vectors
  • 3The user question becomes a vector
  • 4The system finds close chunks and generates an answer with links
Key idea

RAG means search by meaning plus answers grounded in your own sources.
