Test cases for beginners: how to cover an app with tests
What a test case is, how it differs from a checklist and how to write useful checks for a feature.
Useful? Share it
A test case describes one check: what to do, with which data and what result to expect. Good test cases turn 'seems to work' into evidence.
Test case structure
- 1Title: what is checked
- 2Precondition: what must exist before the test
- 3Steps: what to do
- 4Expected result: what must happen
Example: card payment
- Successful payment: valid card, order becomes paid
- Bank decline: user sees a message and order is not paid
- Insufficient funds: clear error and retry is possible
- Gateway timeout: order is not duplicated
Cover more than the happy path
Beginners often test only the successful scenario. Real bugs appear in empty fields, invalid data, network errors and edge cases.
Link tests to requirements
Each test should cover a requirement. AI SDLC generates test cases from requirements and code, then links requirement to use case, code and test.
Key idea
A test case is steps plus expected result. Link tests to requirements to see real coverage.
